This month's theme is about how tax law impacts your business.  Attorney John Carter is our guest blogger and he shares some tips on how to minimize your tax consequences through proper tax and business planning.  Read Article 1 below.

Do you ever wonder when to throw out your old records?  Some say 7 years is a good retention period.  Yet according to the CPA firm of Derderian, Kann, Seyferth & Salucci, PC, some records should be kept for 1 year, 5 years, 7 years, or permanently.  For a simple one page guide on what to keep for how long, refer to Article 2 below.

For those of you who missed the April 18th tax return filing date, you have until October 17th if you obtained an extension on your 2010 individual tax return.  Do you have a good accountant to help you with your personal and business tax planning?  Feel free to contact us for a referral if you need a new CPA or tax attorney.

Sincerely,

Lori

Businesses are taxed differently, depending on the type of entity they have created.  This can also impact the business owner with respect to their personal tax consequences. There are legitimate ways to decrease tax liability for both the business and the owner.

As to business taxation, there are two options:

1)    The "taxable entity", otherwise known as the "C" corporation;

2)    The "pass-through entity", which includes the sole proprietorship, general partnership, LLC or Sub-Chapter S corporation.

Having proper counsel from a tax attorney and CPA is critical so that you don't overpay taxes, or under report income and taxable assets.  No one wants to face an audit, but these days the IRS agents are even more aggressive and are targeting home offices, long standing professionals, and other legitimate taxpayers to try and collect more income tax.  Get proper counsel to avoid or remedy IRS scrutiny.  Read the following articles to brush up on the latest red flags for audits:
