Imagine it is a weekday morning, about 8:00 a.m. and you just fought traffic and searched for a parking space. Then you walk several blocks into a large institutional looking building to wait in a long line with several other people. You are asked to remove your wallet, belt, pocket change, and anything else you might be carrying that could activate the electronic metal detector.
You aren’t in line at Metro Airport, about to embark on your dream vacation. You are in line at the courthouse, about to end your marriage.
The scene gets worse as you cram into a crowded elevator with a bunch of sullen looking individuals and ride up to the floor where your Judge’s courtroom is located. Outside in the hallway you hear someone calling your name, “Ms. Jones, Ms. Jones.” You answer, “yes, I’m Ms. Jones.” The gentleman then introduces himself to you and says he’s your divorce attorney. You are now expected to trust your fate to this person you just met who is going to finalize your divorce.
This happens all too often in “high volume” law practices where someone with the designation of “support staff” handles your case behind the scenes, and someone else you may never have met or talked to before appears in court to handle your case.
Another option might be the “high end” law practice that has the gorgeous office in a prestigious downtown building, where the senior partner will charge you $10,000 just to meet with you and decide if “the firm” wants to handle your divorce.
Are these two scenarios your only option? Definitely NOT! Having the right lawyer who understands your needs and who will properly advise you and represent your interests for a reasonable fee is the desired outcome, and it is your right. But how do you find this person? It all comes down to knowing who to call.
